Frankfurter Buchmesse        Frankfurt Book Fair

For decades, Frankfurter Buchmesse has been one of the biggest meeting places for the international publishing world. What started in 1949 with around 200 publishers has grown into a global event where publishers, authors, agents, media professionals, and creative industries come together to share ideas, make deals, and discover what is next for books and storytelling. Today, the fair is considered one of the world’s leading places for printed and digital content.

The fair is valuable because it brings so many parts of the publishing world into one place. It is not only about books on shelves, but also about rights, translations, new partnerships, technology, and the people behind the stories. The 2026 Frankfurter Buchmesse will take place in October, with Czechia serving as the Guest of Honour under the theme “A Country on the Coast.” The programme will include more than 100 literary and cultural events, with 75 Czech authors expected to take part.

With so many countries, voices, and ideas meeting in one place, Frankfurt has become a space where a book can travel far beyond where it first began. That makes this fair a special place for authors who want their stories to reach new readers and new parts of the world.

Among the stories making that journey is Altruism: A Novel by David O. Otebele. Set in 1990s New York City, the book follows young people facing crime, drugs, family problems, romance, and unexpected pregnancies. At the heart of the story is the idea of altruism, or living for the good of others, as the characters try to make better choices despite the problems around them. Before we turn the page and look deeper into the book itself, let’s first get to know the author behind it.

A Writer Who Connects Education, Society, and Everyday Choices

Behind Altruism: A Novel is David O. Otebele, a writer whose education and interests connect with the social issues explored in his story. Originally from Nigeria, West Africa, Otebele became a naturalized United States citizen. He earned a B.A. in Public Administration and Government from John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York, followed by an M.A. in Political Science from Brooklyn College. Outside writing, he enjoys reading, exercising, coaching soccer, and jogging.

Otebele brings social issues into the lives of his characters, allowing readers to see how problems in a community can affect families and the choices young people make. Rather than focusing only on crime or romance, Altruism also looks at education, personal responsibility, family support, and the value of thinking about others. The story combines these ideas with tense situations, giving readers both personal struggles to follow and bigger questions to think about.

When Difficult Choices Can Change a Life

Altruism: A Novel follows members of the Peterson family, each dealing with personal struggles and different ideas about the future. Davily Peterson is the older brother who has earned a master’s degree and works as a policy specialist for the State of New York. He wants his younger brother, Webster, to stay away from drugs and build a better life. Webster, however, has dropped out of college and become caught up in drug use through his friendship with Don Farrano, also known as Mayo. Their relationship becomes a major source of danger and conflict for the family.

The story takes place in New York City during the 1990s, with settings such as East Elmhurst, Queens, family homes, apartments, and neighborhood streets. These places show the world the characters live in and the pressures they face. Faith Peterson, the family’s sister, is also trying to find her own direction. Her experiences lead her to think more deeply about altruism and what it means to live in a way that benefits other people. Other characters, including Webster’s romantic connections and the people around Mayo, add more complications through relationships, pregnancy, drug use, and threats.

At the center of the novel is the question of whether education, family support, and better choices can help people move away from harmful situations. The characters do not always make the right decisions, and their actions sometimes lead to even bigger problems. That is part of what keeps the story moving. Through its mix of romance, crime, family conflict, and difficult decisions, the book encourages readers to think about how their actions affect the people around them. It also asks whether a person can change direction, even after making mistakes, and begin working toward a better future.
