Florencio Guevara Was born on September 20, 1946, in New York City’s borough of The Bronx. His parents were part of the first major wave of Puerto Ricans to leave the island, trying to forge a better life for their offspring. Raised in Spanish, he learned English through the school of survival-necessity is the mother invention. There was no ESOL program then, so it was akin to a forced immersion program. The result was a perfectly bilingual child.
