When Faith and Medicine Meet
People have different ways of understanding sickness and healing. Some believe that illness is something people must endure through faith, while others believe that medical treatment is also an important part of getting better. But what happens when religious teachings and the practice of medicine seem to have different views? Rophe: A Study of Medicine in the Bible by Allan G. Cougle M.D. explores how these ideas have been understood throughout biblical history.
The book looks at the differences between Old Testament and New Testament perspectives on physicians, illness, and healing. It also explores how religious beliefs, dietary practices, and health laws influenced the way people understood medicine. By examining these teachings and their connection to modern life, Rophe: A Study of Medicine in the Bible invites readers to take a closer look at the relationship between faith, health, and the role of physicians.
A Life Dedicated to Medicine and Faith
Allan G. Cougle M.D. has spent much of his life working in medicine. He attended Tulane University before continuing his studies at LSU Medical School, completing a pediatric residency and practicing general pediatrics for seven years in New Orleans. His curiosity later led him to a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at Duke. He went on to practice private cardiology and serve as an assistant professor of pediatric cardiology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine before returning to the Gulf Coast to establish a private practice in Louisiana and Mississippi. He retired three years ago, according to the provided biography.
Beyond his medical career, Cougle has a strong interest in his Christian faith and local church. He has been married to Judy for forty-five years, and they have four sons and seven granddaughters. He is involved in worship and contemporary Christian music, plays keyboards, and has written several Christian songs. His background in medicine and his commitment to faith come together in a book that examines what the Bible says about healing and healthcare.
