Frankfurter Buchmesse Frankfurt Book Fair
For decades, Frankfurter Buchmesse has been one of the biggest meeting places for the international publishing world. What started in 1949 with around 200 publishers has grown into a global event where publishers, authors, agents, media professionals, and creative industries come together to share ideas, make deals, and discover what is next for books and storytelling. Today, the fair is considered one of the world’s leading places for printed and digital content.
The fair is valuable because it brings so many parts of the publishing world into one place. It is not only about books on shelves, but also about rights, translations, new partnerships, technology, and the people behind the stories. The 2026 Frankfurter Buchmesse will take place in October, with Czechia serving as the Guest of Honour under the theme “A Country on the Coast.” The programme will include more than 100 literary and cultural events, with 75 Czech authors expected to take part.
With so many countries, voices, and ideas meeting in one place, Frankfurt has become a space where a book can travel far beyond where it first began. That makes this fair a special place for authors who want their stories to reach new readers and new parts of the world.
Among the stories making that journey is Growing Up In Africa by Dr. Benjamin Ogbonna. The book follows one man’s journey from growing up in remote parts of Nigeria in the 1950s to becoming a doctor, exploring courage, faith, family, education, and determination while giving readers a look at the difficult experiences that shaped his life. Before we turn the page and look deeper into the book itself, let’s first get to know the author behind it.
A Dream That Started Long Before the Doctor’s Career
Before the medical career, international travels, and years of experience, there was a young boy growing up in Nigeria with a clear idea of what he wanted to become. Dr. Benjamin Ogbonna was born in a small village in Eastern Nigeria and was the second of seven children. His childhood was spent with his family in remote areas, where his father worked as a headmaster and his parents served as missionaries. Life did not come with many of the basic things people have today, but his parents placed strong value on education, discipline, faith, and moving forward despite difficulties.
His childhood experiences became a major part of the way he tells his story. He remembers being a mischievous child, getting into trouble, traveling through remote areas, facing dangerous animals, dealing with sickness, and living through situations that he believes could have ended very differently. Even with these experiences, his goal of becoming a doctor stayed with him. His life was later divided into different phases, covering his childhood, education, the Nigerian civil war, medical school, postgraduate training in the United Kingdom, work in Saudi Arabia, and his later years.
From a Difficult Childhood to a Destiny Fulfilled
Growing Up In Africa is a memoir about a man who had a dream when he was young and refused to let difficult circumstances take it away. The story begins in Nigeria during the 1950s, when Dr. Benjamin Ogbonna was growing up with his missionary parents. The setting is important because the lack of electricity, running water, easy transportation, and nearby healthcare shaped many of the experiences he remembers. He had to walk long distances for water, deal with illness, and grow up in places where even a simple trip could become dangerous.
The story then moves through his school years and into the Nigerian civil war. Education remains an important part of his journey, especially because he had already developed a strong desire to become a doctor. The war changed everything for him. He was separated from his parents, faced hunger and danger, lost friends, and had several close calls with death. At one point, he traveled away from the place where he and his friends usually gathered, only to learn that a bomb later struck that exact area and killed several of his friends. These moments became part of his belief that divine intervention and destiny played a major role in keeping him alive.
After surviving the war, the journey continues toward the dream that started when he was young. The book follows his medical education, his move to the United Kingdom for postgraduate training, his work in Saudi Arabia, his later return to the United States, and his continued interest in maternal health. His work eventually became connected to the problem of maternal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, which became another important part of his life. The book’s message is simple but strong: a difficult beginning does not have to decide how your life will end. Family guidance, education, faith, hard work, and determination can all help a person keep moving toward their goal.
A Story Worth Following From Beginning to End
Growing Up In Africa: A Destiny Fulfilled gives readers more than a story about becoming a doctor. It gives a personal look at growing up in Nigeria during a very different time, surviving a civil war, building a career across several countries, and looking back at the events that shaped a life. Dr. Benjamin Ogbonna does not present himself as someone who had an easy road. Instead, he shares the funny, difficult, frightening, and sometimes surprising parts of his journey.
