Frankfurter Buchmesse        Frankfurt Book Fair

For decades, Frankfurter Buchmesse has been one of the biggest meeting places for the international publishing world. What started in 1949 with around 200 publishers has grown into a global event where publishers, authors, agents, media professionals, and creative industries come together to share ideas, make deals, and discover what is next for books and storytelling. Today, the fair is considered one of the world’s leading places for printed and digital content.

The fair is valuable because it brings so many parts of the publishing world into one place. It is not only about books on shelves, but also about rights, translations, new partnerships, technology, and the people behind the stories. The 2026 Frankfurter Buchmesse will take place in October, with Czechia serving as the Guest of Honour under the theme “A Country on the Coast.” The programme will include more than 100 literary and cultural events, with 75 Czech authors expected to take part.

With so many countries, voices, and ideas meeting in one place, Frankfurt has become a space where a book can travel far beyond where it first began. That makes this fair a special place for authors who want their stories to reach new readers and new parts of the world.

Among the stories making that journey is I Heal You With My Hands by Robert J. Ackerman. The book follows Ackerman through a life filled with military service, personal struggles, spiritual experiences, community work, and questions about faith and the future of the world. Before we turn the page and look deeper into the book itself, let’s first get to know the author behind it.

A Life Built Around Service

Some authors build their stories from imagination, while others have lived through enough experiences to fill many books. Robert J. Ackerman belongs to the second kind. His life has taken him through military service, community leadership, coaching, volunteering, and years of searching for answers about God, people, and the world around him. His work as a Vietnam veteran also became an important part of the experiences he later shared through his writing.

Ackerman served as Director of the Pennington County Drug and Alcohol Task Force, Meade Street Halfway House, Western South Dakota Referees Association, Keystone Ambulance Service, and West Dakota Water Development Association. He also served as a Rockerville volunteer firefighter for seven years, coached a soccer team that won the South Dakota State Soccer Tournament, volunteered at the Salvation Army, and has spent decades researching climate change. These experiences give his writing a very personal point of view because he is not simply talking about life from a distance. He has spent years working with people and facing difficult situations himself.

A Life Told Through Many Chapters

I Heal You With My Hands is not a book that stays in one part of Robert Ackerman’s life. It begins with his youth and moves through many different experiences, including school, family life, work, music, military service, Vietnam, personal struggles, spiritual experiences, and his changing understanding of God. The book includes stories such as his time performing in Oklahoma! and South Pacific, meeting people from the film world, surviving dangerous experiences, and serving in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.

The Vietnam sections bring a different weight to the story. Ackerman describes his work with C-130 aircraft, missions over the Ho Chi Minh Trail, dangerous flights, injured crew members, and moments when he had to help others during life-threatening situations. These experiences become part of the larger story of a man trying to understand what his life means and why he has gone through the things he has.

As the book continues, Ackerman moves into subjects that are much bigger than his own life. He writes about faith, God, healing, reincarnation, Edgar Cayce, the meaning he finds in words and names, climate change, plastic oceans, overpopulation, the sixth great extinction event, and what he believes may happen to the Earth. The book is personal, but it also tries to connect those personal experiences to questions about humanity, spirituality, and where the world is headed.

A Story Worth Discovering

There are books that simply tell you what happened, and there are books that make you stop and ask why those things happened in the first place. I Heal You With My Hands takes readers through Robert J. Ackerman’s unusual life while opening the door to his thoughts about faith, service, healing, and the future of humanity. For readers who enjoy real-life stories with personal experiences, spiritual questions, and ideas that invite discussion, this is a book worth taking a closer look at.
