A Voice Shaped by Freedom
Flordelisa Mota grew up under a brutal dictatorship, and the persecution her father experienced under the regime deeply influenced her understanding of freedom. She later endured civil war alongside her husband and five children before leaving the Dominican Republic because of the violence.
The United States gave Mota an opportunity to build a new life, learn English, and pursue higher education. She earned a BA in English from Hunter College in 2005 and works there as a creative writing tutor. Her experiences with oppression, war, freedom, and change continue to influence the themes found throughout her writing.
