rom its humble origins in 1990 at City Hall with just 149 exhibitors and 200,000 visitors, the HONG KONG BOOK FAIR has grown into one of Asia’s most anticipated cultural events. _Now held annually at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the fair has become a dynamic convergence of literature, technology, and global storytelling—drawing over a million visitors at its peak and expanding to include thematic zones, art installations, and offsite cultural programs. Its growth mirrors Hong Kong’s rising stature as a hub for cross-border creativity and publishing.
This year, the 35th HONG KONG BOOK FAIR 2025, held from July 16 to 22, welcomed over 770 exhibitors from more than 30 countries and regions. With the theme:
“Reading the World – Food Culture • Future Living”
The fair explored how food, memory, and cultural identity shape the stories we tell and the lives we live. Among the 620+ events held throughout the week, the exhibition “Book a Table: Food for Thought” captured global attention through its interactive installations and consular collaborations.
Kravitz & Sons participated not only to display titles but to engage in this vibrant conversation. One highlight was When God Works Incognito: Thoughts & Memories of My Life & Lifetime by Fred Beck—a memoir that captures not just a lifetime of service, but the quiet, powerful ways faith moves through ordinary and extraordinary moments.
Fred Beck, author of When God Works Incognito, lived a life as varied as it was devoted. Working his way through high school, university, and graduate school, he held jobs as diverse as carpentry assistant, movie usher, satellite fabricator, and prison guard. That down-to-earth beginning gave way to decades of spiritual leadership—first as pastor of three churches in Texas and California, and later as a missionary with his wife Linda through the International Mission Board.
For 33 years, the Becks served across Indonesia and India, evangelizing, discipling, planting churches, and raising up local leaders. Their last thirteen years on the field focused on leadership training and administrative roles across the Indian Subcontinent. Even in retirement, they continue to pour into their community through volunteer work in ESL, adult education, and church ministries. The Becks have four children, eleven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren—and counting.
Though deeply personal, Beck’s book carries a larger theme: that God often works quietly, even invisibly, in the lives of those who follow Him.
When God Works Incognito: Thoughts & Memories of My Life & Lifetime is more than a memoir—it’s a spiritual travelogue told in vignettes, offering readers fast-paced yet meaningful glimpses into the life of a missionary family. The first section recounts Fred Beck’s early life, ministry beginnings, and the personal milestones that shaped his calling. From humble jobs to leading congregations, these stories reveal a life built on grit, grace, and guidance.
The heart of the book lies in its account of 33 years of missionary work in Indonesia, India, and surrounding nations. These chapters go beyond logistics—they give readers insight into the challenges of evangelizing in unfamiliar cultures, starting new congregations, mentoring local leaders, and living out the gospel through example, not just doctrine. Readers witness not only what the Becks accomplished, but how God used their struggles, mistakes, and small wins to create lasting impact.
What makes When God Works Incognito especially deserving of a place at the HONG KONG BOOK FAIR 2025 is its universal theme: the unseen hand of God. In a world obsessed with visibility, validation, and results, this book offers a quiet counterpoint—that some of God’s greatest works unfold slowly, in the margins, and often through people who never seek the spotlight. It’s a story of faith, resilience, and purpose across generations, continents, and callings.
