Motor City is a sweeping historical drama that follows three very different men chasing the American dream in Detroit. Angus Drummond sails from Scotland in 1893, eager to work with the new motor cars. Tobias Woodson, a Black farmhand from Mississippi, fights prejudice as he leaves the Delta to join the auto industry. And Jacob Hoffman flees Nazi Germany in 1937, only to face discrimination despite being a brilliant engineer. Their lives intersect in the crucible of early 20th-century Detroit – a city of industry, hope, and hardship. The tone is richly historical and human, weaving together ambition, faith, and social struggle.
This is another gripping story by R.J. Linteau, who brings his attention to detail from his architecture career into every chapter.
Linteau’s background in large-scale construction probably helped him picture Detroit’s factories and factory floors. While he’s best known for thrillers, here he tackles history and social issues, creating three sympathetic heroes in a tough era. You can almost hear the factories humming and feel the clamor of the era as these men strive to build better lives.
