A Journey of Faith, Resilience, and the Power to Heal
Sometimes, life doesn’t ask if you’re ready—it just throws you into the storm. Healing Through Adversity: A Doctor’s Triumph Over Polio by Dr. Sunita Dodani is one of those rare books that reminds you what it truly means to rise above pain, barriers, and doubt. Her story isn’t just about surviving polio—it’s about transforming every limitation into motivation.
From her early years in Karachi to becoming a cardiologist and researcher in the U.S., Dr. Dodani’s journey shows how courage and faith can rebuild a life once deemed impossible. The book takes readers through the emotional, cultural, and physical challenges she faced while growing up as a Hindu minority in Pakistan and living with a disability that many thought would define her forever. Yet, she proves that determination always finds a way.
A Life Rewritten with Purpose
This book is more than a memoir—it’s a powerful roadmap for resilience. Dr. Dodani invites you into every turning point of her life: the moment she was diagnosed, the years of painful therapy, and the academic hurdles she faced to achieve what many believed she couldn’t. But what stands out most isn’t the pain—it’s the way she reshapes it into purpose.
You feel the weight of her family’s sacrifices, her mother’s unwavering love, and the quiet strength of a girl who refused to be seen as “less.” Every chapter reveals a deeper layer of growth, from self-doubt to unstoppable determination. When she writes about walking again with her leg brace, or earning top marks despite discrimination, you can’t help but admire how she never stopped believing in her own light.
I received my medical degree, called an MBBS (MD), following five years of training. Extending my education, I completed a year-long internship at AKU followed by three years of Family Medicine residency, a postgraduate training (1993–1996) with a concentration in preventive cardiology. Though I also passed both Step 1 and Step 2 of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), I decided to pursue postgraduate training in Pakistan to fulfill my mother’s dream to show the Pakistani public what I can do despite polio.
Healing Through Adversity, “My Path to Becoming a Doctor,” p. 33
The standout moment comes when she holds her medical degree—a symbol not just of education, but of victory. It’s that scene that ties the entire book together: a child once written off by society rising as a doctor who heals others. That moment doesn’t just close a chapter; it opens a new one filled with faith, science, and compassion.
